the circus is dead, long live the circus

I took Monday off and had the noble idea of cleaning out our basement unit but instead just brought out our summer fun kit. It was nice to have a long weekend and summer evenings to play. For the first time since I can remember the Smithsonian Folklife Festival did not feature a country or region. This year's theme was Circus Arts, which I thought was especially poignant given that Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey closed this year. Thank goodness MoBob saw them in California and I'd taken Z last year with the daycare. MB and I had even watched the parade of elephants when we lived on the other side of the National Mall. We went to a performance of Sailor Circus which is a training school in Florida. The presentation was well done - each of the teenage performers was poised and professional with very few mishaps. The MC spoke with a defiant tone of the survival of circus arts. But it was a circus without animals.
