NYC, so far

I'm here as a member of the US delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women meetings. The theme is "The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges" and so far it's been pretty cool. This morning at breakfast I sat next to a table full of older women chattering away in Arabic. I thought they were Egyptian lady tourists until we started talking, and it turns out that the lady next to me was the first woman judge in Iraq - appointed in 1959!

I did have a very nice non-UN experience. When I unpacked at the hotel I realized that I'd forgotten my iPhone charger. What was open late on Sunday? Why, the Apple store on 5th Ave., which never closes. When I went to check out the clerk asked me to wait a moment, and he returned with a charger - for free. Thank you Apple!

I'm staying at the hotel right across from the UN. It's pretty old school - kind of like where the Mad Men characters would stay - but I have a huge room overlooking the East River.

On the floor of the General Assembly.

Christy Turlington Burns founded Every Mother Counts and was part of the US delegation as a public delegate.
