Quite frankly, after seeing Black Nativity and other performances of Gospel music, my esteem for African-Americans who join the LDS Church has increased exponentially.
Why Mormon Church Meetings are so Dull
Granted, one never knows in our ward what will happen - I recall specifically when one sister mentioned smoking crack in her testimony - but I know that's not the norm.
Regardless, I really enjoyed Black Nativity, and the performers absolutely radiated with joy. I loved the audience participation - clapping, shouts of "Come on!" and "That's right!" and "Amen!" I liked the first half fractionally more than the second half, if only because everyone looked resplendant in African dress and the re-telling of the Nativity story was really refreshing and original.
