As faithful readers know, MoBob and I do not have a car and depend almost exclusively on the Metro. Specifically, the red line: we live near Union Station, I used to work near Takoma station and now work at Metro Center, and MB gets off at Brookland/CUA for school.
When I got on the train yesterday afternoon at Metro Center the train was stopped several times en route, due to "an emergency situation." Thankfully the air-conditioning was working, otherwise I think there would've been a rapid escalation from good-natured griping to outright rebellion among the passengers. When I arrived at Union Station I called MB and he told me that two trains had collided at Fort Totten. Thankfully one of his classmates gave him a ride home. When he walked in the door I got all teary. Then I got all teary again watching the news coverage. I feel terrible for the affected passengers and their families. MB and I talked about how at least with airplanes there's a passenger list; who knows when someone actually steps on a train?
My mom called from the Philippines this morning. She wasn't really happy when I told her that at least I didn't have an active counter-insurgency in the neighborhood.
