Washington DC is a city of lanyard-wearers. We have a whole box full at home, with souvenir lanyards from the Kennedy Center and the Clinton Library. MoBob's USB key is on a Morocco lanyard. When I was in Aspen a couple of years ago I bought lanyards decorated with flags from a Canadian store called Roots, which MB wears for his school ID and metro card and I use for my various badges and keys at work. Lots of people have asked me where I got mine, and I must say that I haven't seen similar lanyards anywhere else.
I've noticed that the trend with my colleagues is to wear lanyards that show where they've been posted - the more famous/dangerous/notorious, the better. Favorites seem to be lanyards printed with USAID/Afghanistan, USAID/Iraq, US Embassy Khartoum and US Embassy Rangoon. I guess I could've asked for a US Embassy Bangkok or USAID/RDMA lanyard but I'm sure everyone would think Thailand was way too cushy.
