We went to a local food court for lunch. For 100 baht (about $3) each of us got a fistful of tickets to redeem at any counter where food was prepared on the spot. I avoided the language problem by smiling and meekly pointing to the photos of potstickers and fried fish. Yum! (Next time I will take photos.)
I was told by various friends and colleagues that Thailand was an easy tourist destination, and I needn't bother with advance planning. Unfortunately everyone else had the same idea and all the flights to and from Chiang Mai this weekend are sold out. So I'll enjoy the delights of Bangkok this weekend which I'm sure will be just as cool.

It always surprises me when people speak to me in languages other than English because I think Americans stick out so much. But I take it as a compliment. Half the world must think they are related to you!
