Apparently Obama is planning a speech from a major Muslim capital. It turns out that Cairo is the most likely venue, probably because it receives a huge amount of foreign aid. But at least some of the commentators, including myself, vote for Rabat. Morocco was the first country to recognize the US as an independent country, in 1777. The Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship was signed in 1783. (All this info is cribbed from the US Embassy in Rabat website.) Plus Rabat a beautiful, friendly, accessible city, with great weather, and probably a lot easier to manage security-wise than Cairo.
I spent most of my day thinking about floods in Central and South America. I've been writing about Chinooks and Blackhawks transporting relief supplies from Honduras to Costa Rica and Panama. I picture in my mind the hills around Tegucigalpa, in the heavy rain.
