one bag packing: the impossible dream

I think I will be able to squeeze everything for my 10 day trip to the Northwest in a carry-on rollie and a backpack. I'm sure I can only do this on domestic trips where I can ship things back and forth. I sent off 20lbs of materials already and the worse case scenario is that I'll mail things back. At least I'll be staying with folks who have laundry facilities, and I'm assuming that the retreat center where the meeting takes place is equipped.

I can only recall three trips where I was carry-on only:
* Mali-Morocco in October 2004 (it was already cold so sweaty clothes did not pose a problem)
* SoCal in October 2007 (only two full days)
* New York City in February 2008 (by bus and I wore the same suit the whole time)
Not an encouraging track record.

I leave for Portland (via Salt Lake City, woo-hoo) at 7am from Washington-Dulles which means a shuttle pick-up from home at 4am or so. Gah.

Anyway, one of the projects I work on is now in the public domain:
Acting Assistant Secretary Witten's Visit to Kenya and Ethiopia

Thanks! I might just pull an all-nighter so I can sleep on the plane.

That is impressive! Good luck!

I just did 5 days with a carry-on rollie and backpack, and I didn't even wear everything. So I'm trying for that plus one medium checked bag on my upcoming Kinshasa trip.

Thanks! We'll see...good thing the "work" event is a retreat at a camp!
