MoBob and I are going to the Cal-Maryland football game on September 12. It's a big deal - I understand that Cal alums are coming from all over, and the alumni association in DC is planning a lot of events including a tailgate party and tours for visiting alums. I'm not a big football fan and not a very generous alum. I think I've given $25 to the Cal library fund. I can't explain football to MB and I don't know any of the Cal fight songs. He has a Cal t-shirt and I have a baseball cap. And that's it for our gear. We're planning to meet up with my colleague and his wife, who are UMD alums, for our own tailgate party and I think M will have to don a "fear the turtle" t-shirt to avoid getting, er, noticed. Go Bears!

Our sturdy Golden Bear,
Is watching from the skies,
Looks down upon our colors fair,
And guards us from his lair.
Our banner Gold and Blue,
The symbol on it too,
Means FIGHT! for California.
For California through and through!

In a fight between a bear and a turtle I think the bear would have the advantage. Is it a snapping turtle? a ninja turtle?

According to my source (Ed my officemate), it's Testudo the diamondback terrapin. Scary huh. Oski Bear can totally crush him.

I can help you with the fight songs. Remember I was in the marching band? I can even send you a CD. The lyrics you printed are from Fight For California--that's the one we played after every Bear TD, and during the pre-game show we formed the script "Cal" while playing it.

Seriously, have fun at the game! I haven't been to one in years (Cal vs. UCLA in Pasadena in the late 90s) but it was a blast to watch (even if they lost badly) and especially see the band in action again.

The turtle can probably drink the bear under the table.
