I returned from the weekend with a sore throat which quickly developed into a full blown cold, so I sat out the Oscars' party and International Women's Day. Luckily M was around to look after me even though he couldn't get the digital thermometer to read C instead of F and so had to use a calculator to convert my temperature. (What's this? he asked, holding a slim piece of clear plastic. It's a condom for the thermometer, I replied blearily. He frowned.)
I don't know much about African music but I do know Ali Farka Touré who passed away on Tuesday. When I was in Bamako he was one of the artists invited to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2003 and by all accounts was kind, generous, and very professional.
