It was a beautiful, balmy evening - Washington DC at its patriotic best. It's pretty rare to see news about Mali, let alone "Mali" and "Australia" in a tale of thwarted internet love: Aussie Farmer Abducted in Net Love Scam

Isn't Mali one of the world's most impoverished countries (or am I confusing it with Malawi?).
So why did this dude think he'd come out with $85k from going there? Sounds to me that he was really trying to sell Australian residency.

Yep, both Mali and Malawi are in the bottom 20 or so. According to the newspapers in Adelaide he also got screwed with a Russian mail order bride scam, so he seems to be really looking for lurve.
