birdsong

One of the things I'll miss about Little Rock is the volume and intensity of birdsong. When the local avian population started acting up a couple of weeks ago, I sincerely thought that one of our neighbors was playing one of those nature relaxation CDs - albeit very loudly. Then walking out one morning with MoBob we actually saw one of the birds singing away in a tree next to the driveway. The birds are loudest in the morning; until around 9am there is a literal cacophony in the trees behind our apartment. Then in the evening it starts up again, but more on an individual basis. Over toward the grocery store there are birds that cackle like monkeys. Then late at night there is one bird - a whippoorwill? a nightingale? I feel as if my limited knowledge of birds comes from Nancy Drew mysteries - performing solos past 2am.

Just realized from your post on my lj that you attended UCB in the late 90's. I'm in Berkeley every Wednesday with our daughter and her family, so if you cruise into town for a reunion or some such give me a buzz and we'll have you over!

You should come out to our house for dinner before you go. Abby would love to see you and at night, you can hear just about any bird you want! Oh, the benefits of living in the country!!

Beautiful and yet irritating at the same time. How do they manage it?

I guess I shouldn't complain given that I've normally had to live with noisy neighborhood chickens.
