Oh my goodness what an incredibly long slog of a flight (Little Rock-Chicago-London Heathrow-Nairobi), and the only saving grace was that on the longest leg (8h30m London-Nairobi) I had a row all to myself and conked out for most of the flight.
It's been cool and rainy here in Nairobi, which doesn't help the sore throat I came with. The city has grown considerably, and I've noticed quite a few improvements since I left in 2000. There are many shiny new buildings, fewer potholes, and a lot more people. I ventured to Westlands yesterday which is now a city within a city and visited my old office. Well, my former employer now housed in a new complex. I was surprised and touched at how many people remembered me, although they all universally said I'd fattened up!
Afterwards I trekked over to The Banana Box to shop. (Yesterday was my only free day.) I bought a ridiculous number of gifts but hey, all for a good cause. I met up with another former colleague and his wife and their friends for dinner at an Italian restaurant called Mediterreaneo where I had an excellent plate of ricotta and spinach ravioli with tomato sauce. Dinner conversation centered on work (bitter ex-colleagues in particular) and holiday plans (Christmas in Sri Lanka). Oh, international life - I do sort of miss it, although everyone kept asking me about the latest movies that hadn't come to Nairobi yet.
