lost miners

It's a rare occasion when Burkina Faso makes the international news, but the BBC reported last Friday that more than 50 people were trapped in a closed gold mine. I looked for an update and was only able to find an article from the local paper stating the search has been called off. Burkina is poor enough that people risk their lives for the small hope of striking gold, and so poor that there is no high-tech equipment to get them out. Sad.

Sad indeed. So many tragedies around the world that never even make a ripple on our collective consciousness ...

When I was reading about this accident, I couldn't help thinking of the two Aussie miners (in Tasmania I think) who were trapped and were able to survive, and they got iPods while waiting for rescue.

Not to mention all the fan-fare around their rescue and the TV deal they scored once they made it out. Two different worlds.
