milk crisis

So it has been three weeks now since there has been any milk here. Normally one buys milk imported from France or another European country with happy cows. Now there are just the following calcium options:

* powdered milk
Yech! I guess it's time to rotate through the food storage anyway

* yogurt
Locally made. Comes in sweetened, plain, and hideously neon colored flavors. Not bad.

* sweetened condensed milk
Haven't yet figured out what people use this for.

* various cheeses
Some local, most imported, all expensive.

My colleague told me that she's frustrated because she finally bought some (exorbitantly priced) cereal she liked and now she can't eat it because there's no milk.

What to do with sweetened condensed milk? I learned this trick in Ukraine. Stick a can of it in a pan of boiling water for 3 hours. Let cool. Open. You now have yourself a can of caramel dip. Of course that doesn't solve the cereal problem.

Mmm...caramel dip.

I stand corrected: there is local drinkable milk available here. It comes in little plastic bags. If the milk crisis endures I might resort to drinking the local stuff. Hopefully it's pasteurized.

Sweetened condensed milk makes the BEST smoothies! Mix with water, ice and fruit and blend. A guilty pleasure...
