There's a similar remembrance day in Morocco that commemorates the King's return from exile. When I was at the ANU I attended a dawn service for ANZAC Day. I don't think there are a lot of other holidays in other countries that compare to Memorial Day though.
I've mentioned before that I support Fil-Am vets' rights. Both of my grandfathers fought in WWII. My paternal grandfather died in battle - while my grandmother had an affair with an American soldier, resulting in my aunt, and never married her common-law husband afterwards in order to keep the widow's benefits. My maternal grandfather retired as a lieutenant in the army. He fought in WWII and then in the 1950s participated in the military response to the Huk rebellion. He died when I was in college.
I was in an off-site training when General Antonio Taguba spoke at USAID earlier this month. I think both of my grandfathers would've been proud to see a Fil-Am in that position.
