long-distance relationship vs. living together on different schedules

When MoBob and I were in Morocco, he lived in Tiznit and then Ouarzazate, and I lived in Rabat. Basically I was in San Francisco and he was in L.A. He came to Rabat often and I went south for work and for fun, so we saw each other at least every couple of weeks. This went on for three years.

Then I moved to Mali and he remained in Morocco. We visited each other and we went on home leave together. We spent two years this way.

Then I moved to Burkina Faso and he joined me there. But his job with Peace Corps meant staying at the training center during the week. He usually came back to Ouaga on most weekends.

Now we are actually living together but our schedules are totally off. I'm asleep when he's returns home at night and he's asleep when I leave in the morning.

My point is that when we were living physically apart, when we were together, we were actually together. Now that we are in the same household, we never see each other. So it was an especially lovely treat that MB was in the neighborhood today and we had lunch together. I really miss him. Oh, rather, I really miss seeing him awake.

Aw...

Paul and I did that one summer. He'd leave for work before I was awake and not come home until I was already asleep (I was pregnant). It was really sad.

I'm glad you got to have lunch today, though!

This idea has occurred to me lately while Jason's job situation has been up in the air - wondering what we would be able to negotiate while living in different cities. I am sorry to hear your schedules rarely match.

Certainly the downside is the cost of travel but at least your time together isn't competing with dumb things like errands.

Sounds tough, I hope the moments make it for you. It is nice to see people awake occasionally :)

Though I'm a lot more productive when he's asleep!
