oh my goodness! are we supposed to pay that much attention when we read a book? i'd never finish a single novel if i read that carefully...

my answer to most questions would be who cares!

Your daughter doesn't read the HP books?

I'm actually pretty amazed at how many adults (including MoBob and myself - we've read the whole series in both French and English and have all the movies) are into Harry Potter, and serious discussions at that.

we started them when she was unable to read them alone, so i read them aloud to her. then we got to the 4th book and it was just so big, i couldn't keep my motivation up to keep going, as reading aloud is hard work. and she'd get restless and we'd have months break in between. she decided she'd just wait for the films. i've tried to get her to continue alone now that she reads well and much more often, but she refuses to, and i don't know why.

i'd often thought to finish the series on my onw, but the 4th book is on the other side of the world, and now we've seen the film. perhaps i should get number 5 and just restart from there.

They are hard work - I'm surprised that as the books progress they are getting darker and darker - and I can't imagine being a 12 year old and reading about so much death. Although I suppose many children's classics don't tiptoe around death either....

oh kids absolutely love death and disaster - just think of any cartoon! she has been devouring the lemony snicket books recently... the series of unfortunate events. she's always been drawn to the dark side of life. i think they like it more than most adults and it's a way of processing their own darker feelings more safely, i believe

Then there's the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. I've never read them but apparently they're, well, *dark.*

And I cried at the end of "Charlotte's Web." How can I bear reading that to my yet unborn, student-debt promised, soccer-maniac child(ren)?

she was given his dark materials a while ago but didn't feel up to reading them then. although i imagine her reading is good enough now. i should try to get her to have another go.

yes... charlottes web... not to mention bambi...
