Since I've returned I haven't gotten back into the rhythm of posting regularly. Not for lack of topics. I moved my laptop from the bedroom to the kitchen because I found that I spent way too much time in bed, tapping away. So the flip side is that I no longer have the easy of access of reaching over and opening up shop.
I've spent most of this week working on Sri Lanka-related issues. One of my colleagues transferred from Nairobi to Bangkok and told me that he had no tears left for Africa. I had thought the same, but now I understand that there are equally intractable and heart-breaking crises in Asia.
I find though that at least Asia offers the material consolation of modern cities. Why can't Dakar or Accra or Abidjan look like Bangkok? (Or even Manila?) Accra comes close, but not quite.
