This morning I arrived at our office building to find the front door bound with yellow Do Not Cross tape. I went in the back way and it turns out that there was no power and no heat. The elevators worked but nothing else. The building superintendent said he didn't think the problem could be fixed today. I called my colleague (home with a cold), left a message for my boss (in Philadelphia today and New York City tomorrow), and then retired to Savory Café to email colleagues in Lyon and try to do what work I could without any access to files or the server.
Then I went ice-skating at Pentagon Row. It was nice, though the rink was small. I was the only one, except for a couple who struggled for about fifteen minutes before giving up. I just skated round and round in the sunshine and the cold.
