Last night we made an unexpected trip to the emergency room at George Washington University Hospital. Nothing serious, just painful and annoying. My regular doctor is on holiday and the insurance company authorized a visit to the emergency room (welcome to health care in America!) so we went. I got through triage and payment (of course you have to pay before receiving treatment) quickly despite the staff and the patients absorbed by the Redskins game. I was put into a private examination room because I have A Female Problem and waited, and waited, and then saw the supervising doctor, then waited some more, and saw the physician's assistant who actually treated me. Everyone seemed so young.

I am still waiting for the drugs to kick in (antibiotic + painkiller) and in the meantime I'm forlornly considering an exceptionally mellow New Year's Eve/5th wedding anniversary.

And well, no words on the having to pay before receiving treatment. It's something that I just can't understand. :(

I know - appalling isn't it. I think uninsured people go to the big county hospital. It was also difficult explaining our health care coverage plan to the head office in Lyon.

I think any European (or any person living in a country with Social Security) has troubles understanding this system. I can't stop thinking how we'd managed with my mum's situation if we had lived in the US.

Somehow people do...but I don't know how. I read somewhere that the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the US is high medical costs.

I suspect M is suffering more than I am...but I definitely agree that a little tickling is a nice way to take a break!

Ngek! I hope you are feeling better soon!!

(and I too have trouble in understanding that whole "user-pays" medical system that the US has .. I so hope we never head down that path!!)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Thanks! It would've been the same deal even if I'd seen my regular doctor.

Your insurance company requires you to get authorization before going to the ER? That's bullshit.

I always figured the paying before treatment was just a way for them to give you something to break up the wait.

I hope you feel better, whatever it is.

Thanks! I wonder about that "pre-authorization" too - then again I'll reimburse the $100 from our HSA. What a system.
